How do the remedies work?

There are a few different approaches:

Homeopathy works on plants the way it does on humans and animals; by strengthening the plant’s own defences to ward off various stresses like pests and diseases.

It also works by deterring pests using remedies made from the same (or similar) substance, i.e. Helix Tosta, the remedy for slugs and snails, is made from toasted snail shell. If you want to get technical, this is known as isopathy rather than homeopathy.

Soil and nutrient remedies

There is a growing body of scientific research showing the efficacy of homeopathy for plants.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy was developed over 200 years ago by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnneman, who stopped practising medicine as he felt that it was doing more harm than good. He discovered that a substance that caused symptoms to occur in healthy people could, in miniscule doses, cure sick people with the same symptoms.

Homeopathy is based on the following principles:

- Like cures like (as explained above)

- Totality – treat the whole rather than just a part

- Minimum Dose – give the smallest amount that will help, thereby minimising adverse reactions.

- Individuality – the same ‘disease’ may present differently depending on the individual and they may therefore need different remedies.

Homeopathy has been used to treat humans for hundreds of years, but treating plants (known commonly as agrihomeopathy or agrohomeopathy) is relatively new. There are however, a number of pioneers in this field and a growing body of research showing its effectiveness.
